It is hard to bring culturally relevant and interesting materials into the classroom, but the plethora of VR videos online can bring the target culture to life without too much investment. Find out how to use it to promote both vocabulary and grammar input and output and a discussion of other cultures in your classroom. |

Session 38 (6-12) Linda Egnatz, Global Seal of Biliteracy Inspire Learner Autonomy with Seal of Biliteracy Pathways Excitement and autonomy grow when language proficiency is recognized through pathway awards. Data shows that these programs build retention, provide valuable insight on curriculum and instruction, and can accelerate language acquisition rates. Discussion includes: implementation at the Middle/High School level, learner goal-setting, benchmark testing and recognition events, how to combine a State Seal with the Global Seal of Biliteracy‚ a serial-numbered work credential, and the unique Global Seal opportunity for teachers. |

Teaching a Foreign Language to Students with Learning Disabilities & Differences Students with learning disabilities CAN learn a foreign language! In this session, attendees will learn about teaching language to students with learning disabilities in three parts: students with disabilities in comparison to students at the general educational level, strategies to implement for managing one or more students with disabilities or other accommodations in their classroom, and instructional tools to use with or without technology in the classroom. This presentation benefits educators teaching students at a modified level, teachers with one or more students with disabilities in their classrooms, or any educators that want to learn more about addressing the diverse needs of students. |

Session 42 (9-12) Michael Hohnstedt & Angie Behm, Valley View School Dist./ Bolingbrook HS Creating Novice Level Masterpieces Through Impactful Instructional Design Novice learners begin as blank canvases. However, when we design instruction carefully, the odds of filling those canvases dramatically increase. Presenters will share ideas for helping students paint their canvases through engaging activities anchored in culturally rich authentic resources in all the modes of communication. Activities will be demonstrated and shared for both French and Spanish and will include topics on global citizenship, family, friends, school, and city life. |

The Seal of Biliteracy has placed new emphasis on the importance of beginning language learning prior to high school, or even middle school. NNELL is working with educators at all levels to assure that ALL children in America have an equitable opportunity to achieve the Seal of Biliteracy. Session 50 (K-U) Sadatoshi Tomizawa, Ball State University Ways to Save Less Commonly Taught Languages Foreign language education has steadily declined since the 1990s, and Less Commonly Taught Languages (LCTLs) such as Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Italian and Russian, have been hit the hardest. This decline has occurred despite the home countries of these languages being some of the world’s largest and most influential countries. This session shares some of the effective ways to maintain and even expand the LCTL programs at k-16. |

Use Pear Deck to embed assessment and make presentations more engaging, interactive and accessible in remote or in-person settings. Learn how to use Classkick to create interactive digital worksheets that include audio and the ability for students to record directly in the app. Both apps were lifesavers during virtual instruction, but are staples for in-person teaching and learning, as well! Both work for 1:1 classes, or with students’ personal devices. |

Session 55 (Univ) Linda Egnatz, Global Seal of Biliteracy College Entry Game Changer: Biliteracy Seals as an Articulation Tool For Higher Ed WL programs, the State and/or Global Seal of Biliteracy programs are powerful articulation tools and antidote to falling enrollments. Language meta-credentials incentivize enrollment and attract students. Colleges use these strategies to recruit, simplify placement, identify future majors/minors, and more importantly, fill division classes with incoming freshmen at higher levels of proficiency. Includes examples of colleges that issue the Global Seal to students as a workplace language certification. |
