Dr. Nicole Beyers, EdD

Language learning experiences centered on building communication skills includes an awareness of student centered vocabulary.  As language evolves to meet the growing needs of students, how will language acquisition courses adapt the grammar lessons or class exercises to include all voices and identities? How will the selection of resources reflect non colonial views? This workshop will navigate brave conversations on using Windows and Mirrors in Curriculum.

“Racial Equity in the Language Classroom”
Todd Bowen
Dir. of WL, Niles Twp. HS Dist. 219
Professional Learning Chair of ICTFL

As language teachers, we openly talk about culture differences, different ways of expressing ourselves, and creating a welcoming environment for all students.  Yet, talking about race and equity can still cause us hesitation, especially if we are white. We want to do the right thing and not stumble or hurt anyone’s feelings.  In this workshop, we’ll discuss multiple scenarios, explore ways to improve our curriculum, openly talk about our challenges as educators with this topic, and develop action plans to address racial equity in our classrooms.  As language teachers, we are uniquely positioned to make a difference.  Let’s explore how we can do so together.
