GENERAL SESSION - Leveraging Comprehensible Input through Reading in the WL Classroom
Kathrin Frenzel-Luke, Klett World Languages Reading will be discussed as a form of comprehensible input (CI) and how it can be leveraged in the world language classroom to foster language learning. We will connect theory with practice and review specific strategies for engaging with different types of texts for language learners at all levels. We will showcase a variety of examples from authentic resources which will provide the basis for the hands-on activities in the accompanying workshop/break-out sessions. Virtual Reality for Language Learning: Insights from a Fellow Teacher Dr. Tricia Thrasher, Immerse & Matt Phillips, Learning Experience Designer (AATF) Interested in using virtual reality (VR) with your students, but not sure where to begin? This talk is for you. This presentation will focus on how to get started with VR, what types of learning activities are most suitable, and how to maximize the potential of VR for language learning. Attendees will hear about a French high school teachers’ experiences and lessons learned from using VR in his classroom. |
Unlocking the Future: How AI Can Transform High-Level Spanish Classes like AP, Regular Spanish, Heritage, and Dual Credit Juan Fernandez, Elgin High School Chicago AATSP In this session, we will explore the fascinating world of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its impact on the study and analysis of high-level Spanish courses. We will delve into how we can utilize advanced tools and resources to enrich our knowledge in the field of the AP Spanish Literature and Language, Heritage, and Dual Credit courses. The presentation will be in Spanish, but is applicable to any language taught in high school or college. Bring your computer because we will do hands-on activities during the session. |

Immerse: A Deep Dive into the First Virtual Reality Platform Specifically Designed for Live Language Learning Dr. Tricia Thrasher (Research Manager at Immerse) This session will introduce attendees to Immerse, a VR platform specifically created for live language teaching and learning. Immerse is a social VR language education platform that allows students to take language lessons with highly trained language teachers in English, Spanish, and French. Students can also participate in instructor-led conversation groups, converse with ai-powered avatars, and play learning games. Attendees will learn about the pedagogy behind Immerse and have a chance to try out the application. |
Creating an Engaging and Inclusive Approach to Teaching Culture Through the Senses in K-8 Spanish Michelle Lange, Lincoln Hall Middle School and AATSP Teachers will create artifacts and learn hands-on ways to make the arts come alive in their classrooms! Cooking: I will share recipes and pro tips you can use in your classroom without a kitchen sink! Lessons shared can be adopted for 40 min classes. Art: We create and share 1 day to 1 week long lessons that include painting, history, clay, and simple sharpies. Rhythm & Movement: We will share how to get even the most reluctant students moving & grooving! Lessons shared will be 1 day to 1 week long lessons. |

Meet our Showcase Presenters
Kathrin Frenzel-Luke, KWL Higher Education WL Sales Consultant, received her M.A. in Second Language Acquisition from the Friedrich-Schiller-University, Jena, Germany. Her passion for sharing the German language and culture with others has led her to teaching German to all age groups and language levels. She spent the last 6 years teaching at The Ohio State University, where she assisted the Language Program Director as well as acting as Peer Coordinator.
